Mandy Paterson, Motion Designer, Marketing Agency
“I work for a creative marketing agency in Edinburgh. I was working into the evening alongside my colleague for a project that had to be delivered the next day to the client. We had a tight deadline to meet. The pressure was on. It had already gotten late by this point and we were running out of steam. After we had finished editing and producing the movie, we started to export out the final files. Rather than then hanging about into the small hours, we left our machines on to render the files overnight, get some sleep and come back early the next morning. Big mistake. We didn’t think to change our settings for the screensavers which had kicked in. The rendering process had stopped in its tracks. It meant starting the painstaking process over again. We missed the deadline so noses were definitely out of joint that day.
I’ve been using the Wee Shoogle to benefit in similar circumstances to stop the dreaded screensaver coming on. For example, when uploading files onto file transferring sites such as Wetransfer. The mistake I’ve made previously when uploading files taking over 20 mins was to take the opportunity to run out, grab some lunch, or basically get on with something else away from my desk. Only then to find out when I got back the file upload aborted. The Wee Shoogle stops that from happening.”
Paul Martin, Government Contractor
“I’ve worked in various roles in different Public Sector positions, all with intermittent working from home. Being out of the office is certainly now set to be standard rather than the exception. Across each job, remote-employee monitoring was definitely going on. It was down to the individual line manager and how they liked to monitor their own teams. Many liked to keep an eye on the working status in Skype. Your status is dynamically triggered by your activity. If you’re physically not engaging with your machine, your status will change from active to being away. The light next to your name goes from green to orange. For example, if I was reading a work document it would look like I was away even though I’d still be right at my desk!
It’s very much down to the specific organisation, the culture and personal management styles more than anything. In those roles I’ve found there is lots of pressure to show you are always active. It’s subtle but overt at the same time. I don’t need to worry about any of that with the Wee Shoogle. It always nudges my mouse and keeps it moving. I can get my head down into reading lengthy documents, even step away from the desk, and if I hear an alert or ping from my PC I can react to it.”
Jonathan Starmer, PC Gamer, Bristol
“I had been playing Forza on my PC (Windows 10). The game synchronised all my progress data over a long time. I had a quick break, and during that time the screensaver started and as result my game progress was gone. That was really frustrating. I didn’t really have the inclination to contact Forza Support to try and retrieve the data. Basically, I needed to start again. There are going to be times when I simply need to step away from the machine for a break. I’ve also seen other games crash simply because I turned my screen off and on. Some games just don’t seem to know how to handle the computer screensaver or sleep mode function. It’s been pretty handy having the Wee Shoogle as a sort of gaming aide.”
Kate Simmonds, Admin Officer, Welsh University
“It hadn’t even occurred to me that we were being monitored. I reckon it’s a subtle thing but it’s the message it sends i.e. someone who’s working and productive and someone who is the opposite. When a colleague mentioned it was a good idea to keep your screen active, at that point it all made sense. I just hadn’t really processed it before. I for one can see the status updates of the rest of my team. I would always look to see if someone was available or not. It’s the ones that should’ve been online and contactable but constantly weren’t, that really stood out. I realised I was inadvertently monitoring the rest of the team. To be fair, it’s a fairly relaxed and trusting culture overall but you can’t be too sure what’s going through the mind of your line manager. I know I have made assumptions on certain individuals about how hard they have been working during lockdown. Universities are facing a very challenging time right now. We know there are cuts and redundancies on the way. I don’t want to take the chance of looking unproductive. Having the Wee Shoogle just helps me avoid that scenario.”
